Cell is a work with the idea of a body. The work is wall hanged piece made up of repurposed wooden floorboards and air-dry clay. It is a large rectangular piece with a light wooden frame. The backing of the frame is made of different stained rectangular strips of wood that interlock. There are twelve cylindrical forms within the frame with varying circumferences and wave-like edges. These hollow cylinders expand past the frame and enter the viewer's space. Each cylinder is lined with organic looking surfaces with strands stretch and attach to the inner walls of the form The purpose of the work is to describe the body.
However, not in a way we see the body with the naked eye, it is a representation of what our body is made up of microscopically. There are microscopic living organisms that make-up what we are; they are referred to as cells. These cells cluster and work together to create tissue, these tissues continue to make organs and so on until you have a multicellular organism. This sculpture is to represent that unity and give some appreciation of what we are made of.
